Hip-Hop / R&B Overthrow Rock As Most Popular Genre In America [PEEP]

swizz-beatz-meek-mill-fabolous-birthday-party-650-430

For years Rock-N-Roll music has been the most dominant genre of music in the United States. With all the recent advancements, the combination of hip-hop and R&B have dethroned rock for the first time in history, as the most popular genre in the US.

In a semi-annual report published by Nielsen Music, which calculates consumer activity, hip-hop makes up for 25.1-percent of music consumption. Rock followed with a close 23-percent. This marks the first time hip-hop and R&B have exceeded rock’s numbers since Nielsen began keeping track of America’s music consumption.

Most of hip-hop and R&B’s revenue has come from streaming this year. The study shows that 29-percent of all “on-demand” streams come from hip-hop and R&B music, while rock dominates album sales in the country with 40-percent of revenue coming from album sales.

With Apple Music continuing to align themselves with notable hip-hop and R&B acts that have worldwide stardom and TIDAL being ran by hip-hop royalty, Jay-Z, the chances of this trend continuing are quite definitive. Album sales in this day and age continue to decline, as streaming is taking over and will only get bigger in the Internet era.

Kendrick Lamar already has the biggest album of the first half with ‘DAMN.’, which killed shit with record-breaking streaming numbers. Ed Sheeran’s ‘divide’, Drake’s ‘More Life’, Bruno Mars’ ’24k Magic’ and Migos’ ‘Culture’ follow the mega-album.

New Video: Phora – “Numb” [WATCH]

Phora-Numb

A few weeks ago I checked out Phora’s SOLD OUT homecoming show at The Regent Theater in DownTown LA. I was fascinated seeing all his fans that knew all the words to his songs. With relatable messages and catchy lyrics in his music, it’s quite easy to see why his following is so concrete.

Next month Phora will be releasing his ‘Yours Truly Forever’ album, which will include recently-released single, “Numb.” On the profound single Phora battles his addiction and depression demons with tell-all lyrics that paint a picture of a person going through the struggle. The 22-year-old rapper goes into full detail of how he dealt with his issues, something many can relate to.

“In a time where a lot of music just sounds like blah, and everybody wants to pop Xanax, and be ‘turnt,’ I felt like speaking out and showing a different view and perspective,” detailed Phora about the single “Numb” in an Instagram post. “During the time of writing this song last year, I was going through an addiction that I felt like I couldn’t break, I didn’t know how to get away from this depression. I’m not scared to show my weaknesses, I’m not afraid of my past, I’m not afraid to show you my mistakes and who I am…. that’s everything that makes me who I am.”

Phora is in the midst of his headlining “Yours Truly Tour,” which began last month with eight consecutive SOLD OUT shows on the West Coast.

His forthcoming ‘Yours Truly Forever’ album will be released August 18th and include previously-released singles “To The Moon,” “Sinner Pt. 2,” and “Rider” The three aforementioned singles have all surpassed a million views on YouTube and “Numb” figures to do the same. Watch the video below.

Jay-Z Makes History By Topping Billboard 200 With ‘4:44’ Album [PEEP]

jay-z-444

In just two weeks of its release, Jay-Z’s 13th studio album, ‘4:44’ earned RIAA platinum certification. Since then it has received a double platinum certification and Jay-Z has made history by topping the Billboard 200 chart and in-turn becoming the artist with the most No. 1 albums among solo artists of all-time. Hov has the second-most chart-topping albums of all-time behind only The Beatles, who have a total of 19, respectively.

Hov did numbers the first week of eligibility selling 262,000 equivalent album units (174,000 traditional sales). Those numbers also became the fourth biggest week for any 2017 album release. Even though

It’s quite an extraordinary feat considering ‘4:44’ was only available on TIDAL exclusively for the first week, which took away from sales. In addition TIDAL didn’t turn-in first week numbers to Nielson Music, making it ineligible for the chart that week. Since then the album has been made available on all formats and physical copies are now available and include three additional bonus tracks.

Beginning in 1998 with Hov’s ‘Vol.2… Hard Knock Life’, all his solo albums have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. His collaborative albums with Kanye West (‘Watch the Throne’), R. Kelly (‘Unfinished Business’), and Linkin Park (‘Collision Course’) have also all reached the top spot.

CONGRATS, HOV!
