Repping Raleigh, North Carolina Mez came through the Power 106 #LIFTOFF to sit down with Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk to talk upcoming music, working with J.Cole, Dr.Dre and more.
The “Morris” rapper has been in the rap game grinding for a while and expresses it has not been an overnight thing. Music has been part of his life since he was young, from listening to Biggie to freestyle battling at lunch he says “It just felt right, it felt like I was present.. I felt like it resonated.”
Mez goes on to talk about working with J.Cole and how he had a shot to direct the “Middle Child” music video with ideas of him own. Cole gave him a day to work on his video treatment and went to Cole the next day with his pitch which he ended up going with. He adds that the first scene was one he wrote for himself but couldn’t afford to film it for himself with lightning and other effects. When speaking on working under pressure he says “You gotta step up and show up” which is something he also applied when he was at the Revenge of the Dreamers III studio sessions.
When speaking on artists that inspires him he shares Biggie was one of the first rappers that he fell in love with Life After Death being one of his favorite albums and studied his raps. Another major name in the rap game that inspired him was Dr.Dre. Justin Credible asks Mez what a studio session with Dre, is like which he states “Bro is a genius, if you strip everything else away, he different. I remember learning the patterns and cadences from him that I’ve never heard and hes coming up with it…I remember him telling me space is a note.. He was like the space between things is a note too.” He goes on to add that Dre is the type to keep it a thousand and learned not take critiques too hard, rather as a learning opportunity to be great.

Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, Mez dropped in on Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk to spit some bars on freestyle #084. Mez chose to freestyle over Q-Tip’s classic, “Vivrant Thing,” off hi solo debut album, ‘Amplified’.
Mez floated over the beat for over 3 minutes and delivered nothing but heat! There’s a lot of crazy lyrics to catch so listen closely to what the rapper had to say.
Bay Area rapper, Guapdad 4000, dropped in with the LA Leakers and discussed everything from the making of his controversial “Flossin’” music video, to battling it out with his fellow rappers during the Dreamville sessions in Atlanta in the most comedic way possible.
If you haven’t heard already, Mr. 4000 became the center of attention when he dropped the visual for his 2019 single, “Flossin,” because the video includes clips of him receiving “fellatio” on camera. He explained to Justin Credible that the concept originally began with a tweet.
“I told the Twittersphere, ‘hey, the Ferragamo Falcon is extending the glorious opportunity of the oral nature to females in the Los Angeles area to perform [the act] on the fluffy feather of The Falcon.” Apparently, 150 girls flocked at the opportunity before three lucky ladies were chosen.
This wasn’t the only worth-while story the “Scamboy” rapper shared with The L.A. Leakers. He joked about how the track’s producer, James Delgado, had come clean about not knowing a thing about producing or engineering when the pair initially met. “[James] had been Youtubing it the whole way there… He had literally Googled ‘Pro Tools Hot Keys…”
Following this, he took us back with a few stories on how he broke into the rap game to begin with. The artist explained that he began rapping in the sixth grade, performing alongside a friend of his in a talent show. When he moved to San Fransisco, however, he put the mic down, as he did not yet appreciate the music that his friends were making there. He eventually became a member of a group he and his friends created called “The YB’s.” Guap says that people thought the boys were “so handsome and so fly,” that they must already be rappers, so the group then decided that is exactly what they are.
After his stint with The YB’s, he and Kehlani were creating AIM (AOL Instant Message) screen names, which eventually came to be his stage name, Guapdad 4000. And while Kehlani may have influenced his rap name, hip hop veterans like Eminem, 50 Cent, Ludacris, and Mac Dre molded his early musical tastes. Guapdad credits his later influences to be names like Kanye West and Dom Kennedy.
Other legends mentioned during this shit down included Drake and J. Cole and his unbelievable interactions with them, including how he ended up in a Raptor costume on the Golden State Bridge and a part of “the most positive gladiator death session you could ever imagine” with other promising artists.
Check out the rest of the interview below to hear all about Guapdad 4000’s epic adventures.

He spoke about his upcoming ‘Born 2 Rap’ album and why it’s his last, addressed Nipsey Hussle’s unfortunate passing, said he’s never lost a bet to Drake, reacted to the Lakers acquisition of Anthony Davis, and a whole lot more.
“It is the last album. You know what man, 10 albums is good. No other rapper outside of Drake has more number one albums than me. We tied at nine. But, my album comes out, hopefully he don’t throw no sh*t out before me,” The Game said about his upcoming album. “Nine number one albums, bro. I’m tied with Drake, that’s a big feat in its own. Living down the street from Drake, him living down the street from Game; I mean, this sh*t is cool to me!”
