Draped in a straight-jacket and Hannibal mask, Jhene Aiko shows how much of a “Maniac” she is as she attempts to escape from an insane asylum in the video for her single “Maniac.”
According to Jhene after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she began to research insane asylums by watching films and enlightening herself about “bizarre techniques that were used back in the day to treat mental patients.” The research she did inspired her to pick the location for this video.
“Ironically, I released ‘Maniac’ at a time where I had recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder,” she said. “So my interest in the research was genuine. I think we all have some sort of imbalance, but I also believe that we can overcome it. I find my balance through creating art. The ‘Maniac’ visual is the story of a mental patient who finds her own cure.”
It is not known where this single will land, but Jhene is working on the follow-up to her 2014 LP ‘Souled Out’.
