THURZ – Rodney King (Audio)

I wrote a song that gave the first person account of what Rodney King experienced before his infamous beating by officers Powell, Koon, Wind and Briseño. With the help of Mister Whitmore and Ed Cañas, we also created a visual piece time-lapsing the mutilation of Rodney’s face. I released this piece on the 20 year anniversary of his beating last year, March 3rd, 2011. This year on April 29th, 2012, marked the 20 year annivesary of the Los Angeles Riots, the most historical event in Los Angels history. The Riots were sparked by the acquittal of the officers who beat King, which caused 6 days of pandemonium in the city. This event marks Rodney King as a figure with direct influence on our culture showcasing the unjust relationship between LAPD and the South Central community, racism, the legal system, and everything society was and still may be. Rodney King and the Los Angeles Riots also served as inspiration for the rebirth of my solo career, and with him passing yesterday I felt it was necessary to revisit the song and visual before releasing new videos and music.

Rest in Peace, Rodney King (April 2, 1965 – June 17, 2012).

THURZ sits down with Dumbfoundead in a Honda Civic for the latest episode of “The Hotbox.” THURZ discusses his artistry, L.A. Riot, collaborating with Black Thought of The Roots, and provides a live performance of the unreleased, insane record, “Who Stole My Swim Trunks.”

This past weekend LAUNFD headed over to COLORS on Pico for the release of THURZ’s limited edition hat to commemorative the 1992 LA Riots.

Since we can’t embed it on the site, you can watch the recap at LAUNFD.

For some reason my iPhone didn’t catch lighting until the second half of the song so I decided not to leave y’all in the dark and show the last half of the video. Moving on, Thurz brought out BJ The Chicago Kid to perform “Hell’s Angel” at his show at El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles last night. Great track! Shout out to Dream Urban for throwing a dope show!
