Leakers Summer Awards 2017 [PEEP]

3

Hello and welcome to the first annual LEAKERS SUMMER AWARDS!

With summer officially over, it’s time to hand out some virtual awards for a hot, hot summer. I posted polls on our Twitter for fans to vote on six different categories. Those categories include “Hottest Song of the Summer,” “Video of the Summer,” “Album of the Summer,” “Buzziest Rapper of the Summer,” “Hottest Songstress of the Summer,” and ” Hottest Valuable Player.”

Being that listeners are what drive this industry, I left the decision-making completely up to you, the listener. Being that Twitter only allows up to four options, I was limited, but very calculated in picking nominees for each section. If you do have any write-ins or nominees you think should’ve made the cut, feel free to drop them in the comments section.

Let’s get to it.

SONG OF THE SUMMER: LIL UZI VERT – “XO TOUR LIFE”

In a somewhat surprising decision, Lil Uzi Vert wins “Song of the Summer” with his chart-topping single, “XO Tour Life.” I’m not knocking Uzi or the explosive single, but it seemed folks couldn’t get enough “Bodak Yellow” this summer and everytime the song came on everybody got up to shake their ass.

VIDEO OF THE SUMMER: DJ KHALED – “WILD THOUGHTS” FEAT. RIHANNA & BRYSON TILLER

Personally for me, Jay Z’s “The Story of OJ” video is one of the best videos not only of the summer, but the entire year. Hov really touched on a lot of social issues, while illustrating them with a dope animated video and the first video off his ‘4:44’ album. I can see why fans chose “Wild Thoughts” as the video of the summer — anything with Rihanna baring skin and dancing should take the cake.

ALBUM OF THE SUMMER: JAY Z – ‘4:44’

Hov may have missed winning “Video of the Summer” by 1-percent of a vote, but he wins “Album of the Summer” for his critically-acclaimed ‘4:44’ album in a pretty lop-sided way. There’s no denying Jay and his 13th studio album, I mean for Christ sakes, the man repeatedly dissed himself and still found a way to make it sound HOT. Introspective Jay Z for the WIN! *FLAME EMOJI*

BUZZIEST RAPPER OF THE SUMMER: KENDRICK LAMAR

Now this category doesn’t mean you’re the best rapper alive, Top 5 dead or alive, or have produced multiple platinum-selling albums. The “Buzziest” part in this category says it all. This award was intended for the rapper that was making the most noise and getting busy this summer. Lil Uzi jumping off stage sets like he was Mick Foley definitely helped his case, Kendrick Lamar wins though. I hope voters didn’t choose K. Dot based on skillset, although he did kill shit with his ‘DAMN.’ album. He also lit it up on his “DAMN. Tour” and released some crafty, artistic videos that he helped direct as well.

HOTTEST SONGSTRESS OF THE SUMMER: CARDI B

“Little b*tch you can’t f**k with me if you wanted to.” Yeah, that pretty much sums up Cardi B’s summer. No other female rapper or singer was really touching Cardi, who arguably had the best song of the summer in “Bodak Yellow” (although our awards wouldn’t say it). Cardi was also killing shit popping up everywhere. I felt like she was literally on my feed every five posts and she was nearly on every festival bill this summer. SALUTE BARDI!

HOTTEST VALUABLE PLAYER: KENDRICK LAMAR

This award was intended to be the MVP of the summer and according to the fans that was one Kung-Fu Kenny. The man has one of the hottest albums of the year, stayed busy by delivering on features, touring, and making magazine covers. With a tremendous resume, there really is no denying Kendrick Lamar. If you try to just look at the margin of victory.

New Video: Snoop Dogg – “Toss It” Feat. Too $hort [WATCH]

snoop-dogg-toss-it

On Snoop Dogg’s recent album, ‘Neva Left’, the OG brought back some key elements from his early rapping years by reintroducing himself as the Dogg. In the video for “Toss It” he does the same by using a dog to capture women as he did in several of his ’90s videos.

Just when you thought Kendrick Lamar’s critically-acclaimed “HUMBLE.” single was on the shelf and done with, Skrillex comes through and gives it his head-pouncing, electronic touch. It’s one of the hottest remakes I’ve heard from Skrillex.

New Video: Hopsin – “The Purge” [WATCH]

hopsin-the-purge

Hopsin has been on a massive hiatus, his last project was 2015’s ‘Pound Syndrome’ and his musical output since then has been minimal. The 818-repper returns with his new single “The Purge,” accompanied with a crazy “Purge”-inspired video.

On the track it seems Hop is coming for known “mumble rappers” like XXXtentaction, Lil Pump, Lil Peep, and other “Lil” who I can’t make out. He also comes for the current White House staff and GOP. “The Purge” figures to be the first single on Hopsin’s upcoming ‘Savageville’ album, expected to be released later this year with distribution from 300 Ent.

New Music: Tory Lanez – “Shooters” [LISTEN]

tory-lanez-shooters

All Tory Lanez wants to do is go out trapping with some “Shooters.” Rapping over a trumpet-heavy instrumental, the Canadian crooner raps in detail about his desires, coming up, and his status in the rap game. “Shooters” is the first single off Swavey’s forthcoming album, which remains without a title.

Rapsody Showcases Her Skillset On ‘Laila’s Wisdom’ Album [STREAM]

rapsody-lailas-wisdom-1

One of the most slept-on female MCs in the game has to be Rapsody. With her thoughtful rhymes, attention to detail, little concern for public perception, and introspective views, she truly is the definition of real hip-hop. Ready to takeover the game, Rapsody delivers her ‘Laila’s Wisdom’ album.

Don’t let the rhymes fool you, we know she could rap (hence the name), but on this album she also shows her different abilities by executive producing the album along with Terrace Martin, Young Guru, and mentor 9th Wonder.

Rapsody, who appeared on Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ calls on the rapper for a collaboration on “Power,” which also features TDE’s Lance SkIIIwalker on the hook. Other features include Anderson .Paak, Busta Rhymes, Musiq Soulchild, Black Thought, Moonchild, GQ, and others.

Stream the entire album below, it’s pure fire and if you appreciate real HIP HOP, you’ll vibe to it.

Lecrae Spreads Positivity & Joy On ‘All Things Work Together’ Album [STREAM]

lecrae-new-album

There is no doubt that Atlanta’s trap sound is currently dominating the game. Lecrae does rep Atalanta but doesn’t blend in the ATL scene, as he is known as a Christian rapper and is known to spread positivity and joy through his soulful music.

Since the beginning his career, Lecrae has shown he’s versatile and shouldn’t be signed off as a Christian rapper and on ‘All Things Work Together’ he intends to do just that.

Led by the Ty Dolla $ign-assisted single, “Blessings,” Lecrae floats over 14-tracks with additional features from Verse Simmonds, Tori Kelly, 1k Phew, Aha Gazelle, Kierra Sheard and Jawan Harris.

Kevin Gates’ Camp Gives Fans ‘By Any Means 2’ Mixtape [STREAM]

kevin-gates-bam2

While being trapped behind bars, Kevin Gates finds a way to release some new music. The system may be holding Kevin back, but they can’t hold back his music from reaching his streets with ‘By Any Means 2’ being released by his camp.

The sequel follows the original, which dropped in 2014 and includes a 14-tracks. Aside from PnB Rock on “Beautiful Scars,” the mixtape doesn’t include other mixtapes, allowing Gates to freely show he still has the skillset to continue to make music upon his release.

Young Thug & DJ Carnage Drop Collaborative Mixtape ‘Young Martha’ [STREAM]

young-thug-carnage-liger (1)

If you combine Young Thug and DJ Carnage you get a duo called Young Martha. The duo has now released their first collaborative self-titled EP, which early indications point to being the first installment of a series of tapes.

With four bangers, ‘Young Martha’ includes recently-released single “Beef” featuring Meek Mill, “Liger,” “10,000 Slimes,” and the Shakka-assisted “Don’t Call Me.” Aside from being a DJ/producer, Carnage also exercises his vocals on the project.

Back in March, Carnage released a collaborative project with G-Eazy called ‘Step Brothers’.  On Instagram Carn has already confirmed a sequel to ‘Young Martha’ is on the way writing, “Part 2 is on the way.”
